DESCRIPTION:The 12th CHPC Introductory Programming School\n\nand\n\nThe 4t
h NITheCS Summer School on the Foundations of Theoretical and Computatio
nal Science\n\n31 January - 25 February 2022\n\nThe School will take on
a fully virtual form. \n\nThe Summer School is jointly organised by the
Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) of the Council of Scientific
and Industrial Research and the National Institute for Theoretical  Compu
tational Science (NITheCS). This joint effort was specifically motivated b
y a concept paper of the South African Department of Science and Innovatio
n (DSI) that explores the possibility to broaden the scope of NITheP into
a national institute/centre for theoretical and computational science.\n\
nAim of the School:\n\nThe School is aimed at postgraduate students in the
  fields of physics\, chemistry\, mathematics\, applied mathematics\, biolo
gy\, bioinformatics\, computer science\, engineering with an interest in b
oth theoretical and computational science. In particular\, the School aims
at bridging the gap between theoretical studies and High Performance Comp
uting.\n\nThe School will start with a Basic Scientific Programming Course
to introduce students to Linux (Ubuntu) Command line and bash scripting a
nd the Python programming language. This will be followed by introductions
to Foundations of Theoretical and Computational Science on topics such as
 :\n\n\n	Mathematics.\n	Atmospheric Science.\n	Quantitative Biology.\n	Sta
tistics.\n	Quantitative Finance.\n\n\nand advanced online tutorials and wo
rkshops to put the theoretical material into practice. The School is struc
tured in such a way to encourage students to actively solve challenging pr
oblems that the lectures will pose. Students should be prepared to learn o
 n their own!\n\nSchool Syllabus:\n\nThe School syllabus will cover:\n\nThe
first week of Introduction to Linux. It will cover a basic introduction t
o Linux command line\, bash scripting\, and Introduction to PBS Pro and jo
b submission at CHPC (Dr Krishna Govender\, Centre for High Performance Co
mputing\, CSIR).\n\nThe second week of Introduction to Python Programming:
It will cover the basics of python and syntax\, advanced functions and us
ing Matplotlib with python\, and the use of advanced mathematical packages
such as Numpy and Scipy (Dr Andrew Gill\, Centre for High Performance Com
puting\, CSIR).\n\nThe remaining two weeks will cover topics related to:\n
\n\n	A Python-based Introduction to Mathematical Proofs: Prof Zurab Janel
idze (SU).\n	Earth Systems Modelling & Climate Change Modelling: Dr Mary-
Jane Bopape (South African Weather Service).\n	Machine learning for Bioaco
ustics: Dr Emmanuel Dufourq (SU/AIMS).\n	Introduction to Statistics using
R: Prof Freedom Gumedze (UCT).\n	Introduction to Quantitative Finance: (
TBA).\n\n\nApplication and Registration:\n\nThe CHPC and NITheCS call for
all talented students registered for Honours\, Masters\, PhD including po
stdoc in South Africa to submit their applications. The registration fee i
s free for all successful Applicants. As public-funded institutions\, the
CHPC and NITheCS support the transformation of South Africa and thus the
School organizers highly encourage students from previously disadvantaged
backgrounds to submit their applications. There will be no scholarship fo
r successful applicants as the school will be hosted on a virtual platform
. However\, a background of scientific programming skills and basic Linux
will be an advantage. \n\nImportant dates:\n\nSchool start:  31 January
 2022\n\nClosing date for scholarship applications: 23h59 Friday\, 31 Dece
mber 2021\n\nNotification of Successful Candidates: will be notified by 2
 1 January 2022\n\nSchool end: 25 February 2022\n\nSchool Organizing Comm
 ittee:\n\nDr. Daniel Moeketsi (CSIR\, NICIS-CHPC))\n\nProf Francesco Petru
 ccione (UKZN & NITheCS)\n\nBinjamin Barsch (CSIR\, NICIS-CHPC)\n\nProf Zu
rab Janelidze (SU)\n\nGeneral Inquiries:\n\nFor general inquiries please c
