DESCRIPTION:The 14th CHPC Coding Summer School\n\nand\n\nThe 6th NITheCS
Summer School on the Foundations of Theoretical and Computational Scienc
 e\n\n29 January - 9 February 2024\n\nThe Coding Summer School takes p
lace in a physical form at various university and research locations arou
nd South Africa and Southern Africa. Students are required to attend one
 of the designated locations.\n\nRepresentation from 2023 CSS:\n\n\n\nSee

Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) of the Council of Scientific
and Industrial Research and the National Institute for Theoretical  Compu
tational Science (NITheCS). This joint effort was specifically motivated b
y a concept paper of the South African Department of Science and Innovatio
n (DSI) that explores the possibility to broaden the scope of NITheP (Nati
onal Institute for Theoretical Physics) into a national institute/centre f
or theoretical and computational science.\n\nAim of the School:\n\n"Train
researchers across South Africa and Southern Africa the fundamentals of pr
 ogramming\, data science\, HPC\, and computational sciences."\n\nStructure
:\n\nThe school's structure included daily lectures\, interactive tutorial
s\, notes\, quizzes and assignments. Experts from a range of domains will
also present STEM talks\, exposing participants to the varied applicatio
ns of the coding skills being taught. Zoom is used to live-stream the lect
ures\, and Slack is used as the official communication medium. Canvas is u
sed as the learning management system for hosting course notes and assignm
 ents.\n\nFormat:\n\n\n	Lectures/tutorials occur Monday to Friday\n	Lecture
 /tutorial times: 09:30 - 16:00 with breaks each day\n	PDF notes\, exercis
es\, and YouTube videos provided\n	Certificates awarded to qualifying stud
ents\n\n\nWeek 1:\n\nDuring week one\, participants will learn the fundame
ntals of Python and data science which will allow them to analyse and man
ipulate various datasets. They will also be introduced to Linux and Bash i
 n order to learn HPC skills.\nWeek 1\, main topics:\n\n\n	\n	Python Basics
 \n	\n	\n	Data Visualization\n	\n	\n	Data Analysis\n	\n	\n	Data Management\
 n	\n	\n	Bash Basics\n	\n\n\n \n\nWeek 2:\n\nIn week two\, participants ar
e exposed to advanced Python applications\, covering machine learning\, c
omputational sciences\, and domain specific topics.\n\nWeek 2 main topics:
 \n\n\n	\n	Machine Learning\n	\n	\n	Probability Theory and Statistics\n	\n\
 n\nWeek 2 additional topics:\n\n\n	\n	Numerical Computations: Numpy Introd
 uction\n	\n	\n	Biomedical / Bioinformatics Sciences (TBC)\n	\n	\n	Computa
tional Chemistry / Material science\n	\n	\n	Common Astronomy Software Appl
 ications: CASA Introduction\n	\n	\n	ODEs & Monte Carlo Simulation\n	\n\n\
 n \n\nMain Python libraries covered:\n\n- Pandas\, Matplotlib\, Seaborn\
 , Numpy\, Sympy\, Scikit-learn/TenosrFlow...\n\nIn-person tutorials and wo
rkshops will be held to put the material into practice. The School is stru
ctured in such a way to encourage students to actively solve challenging p
roblems that the lectures will pose. Students should be prepared to learn
on their own!\n\nTrainers:\n\nCHPC: Mr Binjamin Barsch\, Dr Kevin Colvill
e\, Mr Mthetho Sovara\, Miss Nomlindelo Mfuphi\n\nNITheCS: Prof Francesco
  Petruccione\, Prof Ilya Sinayskiy\n\nApplication and Registration:\n\nTh
e CHPC and NITheCS calls for all talented students registered for a postg
raduate degree or if your a researcher in industry\, to submit their ap
plications.\n\nThe registration fee is free for all successful applicants\
, however the students must attend the designated university locations. As
public-funded institutions\, the CHPC and NITheCS support the transforma
tion of South Africa and thus the School organizers highly encourage stud
ents from previously disadvantaged backgrounds to submit their application
 s. A background of programming skills and basic Linux will be an advantag
 e. \n\nRegistration is required for students to partake in the CSS\, that
includes receiving any type of certificate or letter of participation.\n
\n \n\nPlease take note:\n\n- No accommodation and no travel costs will
be covered.\n\n- Light snacks\, tea and coffee will be provided\n\nCertifi
cation:\n\nCertificate of Completion:\n\n•Students attended their univer
 sity venue in person: Week 1 – 80%\, Week 2 – 60%\n\n•Students compl
eted all quizzes in the given time frame\n\n•Students completed the CSS
 project\n\n•Final mark at least 50%\n\n \n\nLetter of Participation:\n\
n•Students attended online or did not meet physical attendance criterion
\n\n•Students completed all quizzes in the given time frame\n\n•Studen
ts completed the CSS project\n\n•Final mark at least 50%\n\n\n\n\n \n\n
Registration dates:\n\nStarting date for registration:  4 July 2023\n\nC
losing date for registration: 10 December 2023\n\nNotification of Successf
ul Candidates: will be notified latest by 10 November 2023\n\nNote: Limit
ed space is available at each venue. If capacity has been reached by late
registrations then students will need to attend online.\n\n \n\nSchool Da
