DESCRIPTION:9 July - 15 July 2023 (Team Selection)\n\nHosted by\n\nthe Cen
ter for High Performance Computing (CHPC) of the Council for Scientific an
d Industrial Research (CSIR) and funded by the Department of Science and I
nnovation (DSI).\n\nThe CHPC invites applications from suitably qualifie
d candidates to enter the CHPC Student Cluster Competition. The CHPC Stude
nt Cluster Competition gives undergraduate students at South African unive
rsities exposure to the High Performance Computing (HPC) Industry. At the
CHPC's 2023 National Meeting teams build small HPC clusters on the exhibit
ion floor from hardware provided by the CHPC and our industrial partners.
The winning team is entered into the ISC Student Cluster Competition hoste
d at the 2024 International Supercomputing Conference in Germany.\n\nIf yo
u are not willing to travel to the University of the Free State\, or are a
pplying from an institution outside of South Africa\, or you do not meet t
he eligibility requirements below\, please use this link Student Cluster C
ompetition: Virtual Training. (Please note: Only in-person participants wi
ll be eligible to advance to the Second Round).\n\nThis competition regist
ration is only open to South African students enrolled in a computer scien
ce related degree who are in 2nd year if enrolled in a 3 year degree\, or
in 2nd or 3rd year if enrolled in a 4 year degree.\n\nTeam Selection is
designed to impart critical knowledge for building a cluster\, this inclu
des: using Linux systems\, the basic software stack of a cluster and clust
er design. Team Selection concludes with an assignment which requires each
team to build a prototype cluster in the Cloud. The results from the Team
Selection project and this application are used to select the teams which
will proceed to the CHPC Student Cluster Competition.\n\nThe Team Selecti
on round will run from Monday 9 July to Saturday 15 July and will be hoste
d at the University of the Free State.\n\nTeams chosen in the selection ro
und proceed to the CHPC Student Cluster Competition where they build small
HPC clusters on the exhibition floor at the CHPC National Meeting. The pa
rticipants are given a selection of applications to optimise and run on th
eir cluster to demonstrate their design’s performance. The winning team
is entered into the 2024 ISC Student Cluster Competition during May / June
.\n\nEach team is assigned a budget and a parts list from which they must
design their cluster. The hardware\, as specified in the cluster design\,
is delivered to the exhibition floor of the CHPC National Meeting. The tea
ms are judged on a combination of their benchmark results and the design o
f their cluster.\n\nThere are no fees for successful applicants. The CHPC
will cover the costs of accommodation during all events as well as travel
and conference fees\, where applicable.\n\nFor more information email: nli
