DESCRIPTION:There will be an OpenHPC2 virtual training lab open to all st
udents participating in the CHPC Student Cluster Competition as well as ot
her students interested in implementing an HPC system.\n\nThis FREE traini
ng lab is a virtual training workshop to gain hands-on experience with dep
loying a three-node virtual cluster using the OpenHPC2.x software stack.\n
\nUsing Vagrant and VirtualBox\, the virtual cluster will be deployed on
participants' own machines and remain available for future development and
practice.\n\nAll interaction is facilitated through a virtual classroom\,
with the learning material provided as an online guide.\n\nThe course mat
erial is estimated to take 15-20 hours of hands-on time to complete\, with
the course being open indefinitely (likely to close a week prior to the l
aunch of the Student Cluster Competition 2024). \n\nIMPORTANT NOTE\n\nThi
s workshop is provided as an opportunity for students to self-learn and pr
actice the implementation of a 3-node cluster and to experiment with code
compilation and parallel job submissions. It is ideally suited for partici
pants in the Student Cluster Competition to give them an opportunity to fr
ont-load their hands-on exposure to Linux\, HPC software stacks\, and appl
ication deployment.\n\nThere are NO LECTURES and support will be VERY LIMI
TED. The workshop will be hosted on an interactive virtual classroom platf
orm to allow participants to share ideas and solutions. \n\nPre-Requisite
s -- it is suggested that participants have experience and a basic underst
anding of:\n\n\n	HPC concepts (from a System Administrator's perspective):
 \n	\n What is HPC\n Why HPC\n HPC hardware\n Parallel Computing Concep
ts\n Software Compilation\n Material presented by the CHPC's Student Clu
ster Competition is sufficient to meet this requirement\, available here:
Introduction to HPC for System Administrators.docx\n	\n	\n\n\nThe worksh
op will concentrate on a guided hands-on OpenHPC deployment  using an on
line guide. \n\nAt the end of the deployment process\, a fully functional
Management Server will be operational as a VM\, to be used to perform fut
ure HPC-related training and learning.\n\nContent will be delivered asynch
ronously:\n\n\n	OpenHPC 1.3 Training Videos are hosted on YouTube (NOTE: a
t this stage the OpenHPC2.x videos are not yet available).\n	 \n	Collabor
ative Virtual Classroom environment (Piazza\, EdSTEM or similar) where all
participants will be encouraged to participate collaboratively through th
e workshop.\n\n\nYou do not need an operational HPC system to perform this
training - everything will be run on your local machine (desktop or lapto
p). There are 100's of participants who have all successfully run the 3-no
de virtual cluster on their local machines\, but if you experience resourc
e constraints\, we will do our best to investigate and assist.\n\nIn extre
me circumstances of low or unreliable internet connectivity\, there are me
chanisms to perform the lab entirely offline in your own time\, although w
e will unfortunately not be able to facilitate this during the official vi
rtual lab - please contact us for further information and assistance if yo
u are faced with connectivity issues that prevent you from participating f
ully in the official virtual lab.\n\nPlease note: there is no cost to part
icipate.\n\nPurpose for the collection of personal data:\n\n\n	To make con
tact with you with any matters regarding this course\;\n	Information on yo
ur technical background is used to determine if you are eligible to partic
ipate in this event\;\n	To report to the Departments of Higher Education a
nd Training\, Science and Innovation\, and the Services Sector Education a
nd Training Authority (SETA)\;\n\n\nWe look forward to sharing this learni
 ng journey with you!\n\nhttps://events.chpc.ac.za/event/136/
