DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: Please see the new links to the EPCC Supercomputing co
urse below.\n\nPractical HPC 2025 Winter School Online Course\n\nThis onli
ne course will introduce African HPC users to the systems at the CHPC and
help you develop practical skills in using the cluster for your scientific
work. Attendees will learn the basics of using the CHPC Lengau cluster al
ong with how to convert the computational intensive parts of their scienti
fic workflow into a job script suitable for the CHPC. The Practical HPC co
urse is 2 weeks long and will need about 4 hours per day\, including dail
 y practical sessions each afternoon.\n\nSyllabus:\n\nSelf-study:\n\nBefore
the course starts…\n\n\n\n	\n	Introduction to Supercomputing (see belo
 w)\n	\n	\n	CHPC Induction course:\n\n	\n \n CHPC Hardware\n \n \n The
  CHPC Systems\n \n \n Job Scripts and the PBSPro Scheduler\n \n	\n	\n
 \n	Linux commands\n	\n\n\nWeek 1 — Practical HPC:\n\n\n	\n	Advanced Job
 Scripts\n	\n	\n	How to Fix Errors\n	\n	\n	Applications—from Workflow to
 Job Script\n	\n\n\nWeek 2 — HPC Software\n\n\n	\n	Scaling & Performance\
 n	\n	\n	Installing Your Own Software\n	\n	\n	Python virtual environments\n
 	\n	\n	Matlab*\n	\n\n\n\nIntroduction to Supercomputing\n\n\n\n\nEPCC's "I
ntroduction to Supercomputing" provides the necessary foundational informa
tion and concepts for the Practical HPC course. Their course is free and y
ou will not need to sign up to access it.\n\nThe first 3 sections are need
ed for the CHPC Winter School that follows.\n\nLesson plan & guide:\n\nAft
er the introduction\, please work through the first 3 sections of the EPCC
  course:\n\n\n\n\n	\n	Supercomputing \n	\n	\n	Parallel Computers — SC
 Hardware\n	\n	\n	Parallel Computing — SC Programming\n	\n	\n	[Optional]
Computer Simulations\n	\n\n\nSection 4 is optional but will help you und
erstand how scientific simulations use super computers.\n\n \n\nSkip the
exercises as similar material is covered in the CHPC courses.\n\n \n\n\n*
New for 2025: Matlab\n\nThe 3-hour Matlab module is presented in partnersh
ip with Mathworks and Optinum.  This module will cover the use of Matlab
for HPC with examples on the CHPC cluster.\n\nHow to sign up:\n\n\nApply f
or the Practical HPC Winter School  here (see the menu on the left).\n\nN
ote:\n\nApplications to enroll in the Winter School are moderated and will
take 1 to 3 business days to process.  Once your application is approved
you will be enrolled from 8 July 2025 in the online course and receive lo
gin details via email.\n\nYou will need to complete all of the first 3 sec
tions of the OxRSE Supercomputing course to be fully prepared for all the
topics in the CHPC Practical HPC course.\n\nWho May Apply\n\nThe CHPC Wint
er School is open to all CHPC users as well as students\, postdocs and sta
ff of teaching and research institutions from South Africa\, SADC\, the SK
A Partner countries\, and other African partner countries of the CHPC.\n\n
Limited Places\n\nThe 2025 Winter School has limited resources and and wil
l only be able to include 80 students.  Preference will be given to new C
HPC users and those with genuine need.  Successful applicants will be ful
ly enrolled in the course and have access to the interactive sessions\, qu
izzes and assignments during the supervised learning period.\n\nUnsuccessf
ul applicants may request access to the lecture notes and other non-intera
ctive course material for self-study.\n\nTimelines\n\nRegistration: open u
 ntil 12:00 on 1 August 2025\n\nSelf-study: 30 June to 27 July for self-stu
dy\n\nPractical course:  28 July to 8 August 2025 for supervised learning
