Abstract Guide

Guide for Abstracts and Proposal Submission

Please address queries regarding abstracts to Andrew Gill (agill at csir.co.za).

The CHPC welcomes contributions for:

  • An oral presentation in the technical programme;
  • A poster display for the technical programme;
  • A proposal for a Workshop (including short courses and tutorials), Birds-of-a-Feather (BoF) or Special Interest Group (SIG) session.

The breakaway sessions from Monday to Wednesday, 4 to 6 December 2017, are open to researchers from academia, industry and government for oral presentations. The breakaway sessions will occur in parallel and will be coordinated by session organisers.

Please use the Abstracts submission form to submit all contributions.  You may type your abstract content directly into the form, or may upload the abstract as a file (PDF or ODT preferred).

Note on HPC Content: please give a brief description of the HPC aspects of your work, which summarizes the use of HPC or the application to HPC. For example, include information on HPC application code used, problem size, core counts, memory, scaling, use of OpenMP or MPI, etc.

Proposals for Workshops, or B.o.F. or S.I.G. sessions.

Please see the templates on the main page.  Download and fill in then submit as for an abstract using the Abstracts link.  Select the Workshop, BoF or SIG track as appropriate.

Presentations

The breakaway sessions from Monday to Wenesday, 4 to 6 December 2017, are open to researchers from academia, industry and government for oral presentations. The breakaway sessions will occur in parallel and will be coordinated by session organisers.

The presentation or poster should focus on one of the following topics:

  •     Astrophysics and Cosmology
  •     Computational Chemistry
  •     Computational Mechanics
  •     Computational and Space Physics
  •     HPC Techniques and Computer Science
  •     HPC Big Data and Data Science
  •     Material Science
  •     Health and Life Sciences
  •     Earth System Modelling
  •     Other sciences and HPC related fields

Proposals for S.I.G. breakaway sessions in specialised topics are also welcome.

Oral presentation guidelines:

  • Each delegate will only be allocated 20 minutes per presentation or on the discretion of breakaway session organiser.
  • A maximum of three abstracts (talks and/or posters) per delegate may be submitted.
  • The email address of the presenter must be on the abstract and the maximum length of each abstract should be one page. In the case where tables and figures are included in the abstract, the length of the abstract can extend to two pages.

Student Poster Competition

All posters by students will automatically be entered into the CHPC Student Poster Competition.  Prizes will be awarded on Wednesday at the Prize-Giving evening function.

POSTER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Poster display boards will be provided by the CHPC and will be set up in the exhibition area. Display boards will be 900mm wide and posters should be in portrait A1 size. Please note that posters must be in English and must have a title, author's name and affiliation. Delegates, especially students are encouraged to bring posters relating to the theme of the conference or their field of study. All posters should be set up between 2pm and 5pm on Sunday 3 December 2017 and be removed on Thursday, 7 December.

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES FOR TALKS

File Formats

In addition to Powerpoint (PPT) or Open Office Presentation (ODP) file, provide a PDF of your slides. PDFs are more portable, the fonts and images are all embedded in the file, and you can usually be sure the slides will display as on your own computer.

Video Formats

If you include videos with your presentation, also bring along the videos as separate files in case the embedded video does not play.  The recommended format for videos is MPEG-2 which is widely supported, or AVI using the XviD codec.  The video should preferably not have sound, but if it does, normalise the audio track to avoid sudden changes between soft and loud and keep the volume to a normal conversational level.

Readability is Most Important

  • Use high contrast between text and background colours.
  • White or light colour backgrounds with black text work best as the hall will be lit with overhead lights during the talks and slides with dark or black backgrounds will be washed out by the room lighting.
  • Avoid using an image for the background of slides as this makes the text harder to read.
  • Use a sanserif font (e.g., Ariel, Helvetica, or CM Bright) and avoid serif fonts (like Times).
  • Use a large enough font size so that audience members in the far rows can still read your text and equations.

Be aware of aspect ratio:

The data projector will have a resolution of 1024x768 and a 4:3 aspect ratio.  Most laptops and many desktops have widescreen displays with aspect ratios of 16:9 or 16:10.  Check your slides display properly at 1024x768 and confirm that the font and images do not look squashed or stretched.

Be concise:

  • Talks are 20 minutes long which means approximately 15 slides, including the title and conclusion.
  • Any videos must be short.

Time will be strictly adhered to as the schedule is tight.

Be prepared:

Bring your files with you on a USB flash drive. Preferably, on more than one drive.  And email everything to us before, just in case.
