Guide for Abstracts
The breakaway sessions from Monday to Wednesday, 30 November to 2 December 2020, are open to researchers from academia, industry and government for oral presentations. The breakaway sessions will occur in parallel and will be coordinated by session organisers.
Please address queries regarding abstracts to Andrew Gill (agill at csir.co.za).
The CHPC welcomes contributions for:
- An oral presentation by researchers in the technical programme.
- A micro-talk video presentation by students for the technical programme.
- The five-minute micro-talk is in place of the usual Poster presentation.
Please use the Call for Abstracts submission form to submit all contributions. You may type your abstract content directly into the form, or may upload the abstract as a PDF file.
HPC Content: please include a brief description of the HPC aspects of your work, which summarizes the use of HPC or the application to HPC. For example, include information on HPC application code used, problem size, core counts, memory, scaling, use of OpenMP or MPI, computational challenges, etc.
Note that both the video and slides of your presentation will be made publicly available from the start of the conference and on the CHPC web site thereafter. Make sure to only include information that can be made public in both.

Abstract Guidelines:
- A maximum of three abstracts (talks and/or micro-talks) per delegate may be submitted.
- The text of the abstract may be entered directly into the form,
- or uploaded as a PDF file:
- The email address of the presenter must be in the PDF file.
- The maximum length of each PDF abstract should be one page.
- In the case where tables and/or figures are included in the PDF abstract, the length of the abstract can extend to two pages.
Student Micro-talk Competition
All full-time students will automatically be entered into the CHPC Student Micro-talk Competition. Prizes will be awarded on Wednesday during the Closing session.
Each micro-talk will be a 5 minute video presentation. Please see the separate Micro-talk Guide for details.
HPC Content: include comments on the HPC aspects of your work, which summarizes the use of HPC or the application to HPC. For example, include information on the HPC application code used, problem size, core counts, memory, scaling, use of OpenMP or MPI, computational challenges, etc.
Failure to include HPC content will most likely lead to rejection.
GUIDELINES FOR FULL TALKS
- Each delegate will only be allocated 20 minutes per presentation.
File Formats
Provide a PDF of your slides. PDFs are more portable, the fonts and images are all embedded in the file, and you can usually be sure the slides will display as on your own computer.
Readability is Important
- Use high contrast between text and background colours.
- White or light colour backgrounds with black text work best.
- Avoid using an image for the background of slides as this makes the text harder to read.
- Use a sanserif font (e.g., Ariel, Helvetica, or CM Bright) and avoid serif fonts (like Times).
- Use a large enough font size so that your text and equations are still legible at medium resolution (480p).
Be concise:
- Talks are 20 minutes long which means approximately 15 slides, including the title and conclusion.
Time will be strictly adhered to as the schedule is tight.
Video Formats
All accepted talks must be pre-recorded as a screencast (slide show with narration) and the video uploaded along with your presentation slides ahead of time. In case of technical and/or network problems this video will be used instead of the live stream.
The recommended file format for videos is MP4 or MKV, with AVC or x264 codecs for video, and AAC, Ogg Vorbis or MP3 for audio. The video file should not be too large, around 500MB in size. It is recommended that 720p be used, and not higher than 1080p, to ensure all details of the slides are legible. The aspect ratio must be 16:9.
Please normalise the audio track to avoid sudden changes between soft and loud and keep the volume to a normal conversational level.
Note that both the video file and slides PDF file of your presentation will be made publicly available for download from the start of the conference and on the CHPC web site thereafter. Make sure to only include information that can be made public in both.
