Guide for Presentations

The breakaway sessions are open to researchers from academia, industry and government for oral presentations. The breakaway sessions will occur in parallel and will be coordinated by session organisers.

Please address queries regarding abstracts to helpdesk@chpc.ac.za.

Presentations

The technical programme will be devoted to high performance computing and related fields within the National Cyberinfrastructure Initiative and consists of  the following tracks divided among the main parallel sessions:

HPC Technology

  • HPC Technology and Computer Engineering
  • HPC Techniques and Computer Science
  • High Performance Storage and IO
  • Cognitive Computing and Machine Learning
  • Quantum Computing
  • Cloud Computing
  • Other HPC related fields

HPC Applications

  • Astronomy and the SKA
  • Astrophysics and Space Physics
  • Bioinformatics and Biological Sciences
  • Computational Chemistry
  • Computational Mechanics
  • Earth System Modelling
  • Material Science
  • Other sciences using HPC

SA NREN

  • National Research and Education Networks
  • Cyber Security

DIRISA

  • Data Intensive Research

GUIDELINES FOR FULL TALKS

  • Each delegate will only be allocated 20 minutes per presentation.

File Formats

Provide a PDF of your slides. PDFs are more portable, the fonts and images are all embedded in the file, and you can usually be sure the slides will display as on your own computer.

Readability is Important

  • Use high contrast between text and background colours.
  • White or light colour backgrounds with black text work best.
  • Avoid using an image for the background of slides as this makes the text harder to read.
  • Use a sanserif font (e.g., Ariel, Helvetica, or CM Bright) and avoid serif fonts (like Times).
  • Use a large enough font size so that your text and equations are still legible at medium resolution (1024×576).

Be concise:

  • Talks are 20 minutes long which means approximately 15 slides, including the title and conclusion.

Time will be strictly adhered to as the schedule is tight.

HPC Content: please include a brief description of the HPC aspects of your work, which summarizes the use of HPC or the application to HPC. For example, include information on HPC application code used, problem size, core counts, memory, scaling, use of OpenMP or MPI, computational challenges, etc.

Slide File Formats for Presentations

Presentation slides for the physical conference should be provided as PDF, PPTX or ODF files and delivered to the venue before the start of the session.  Note that PPTX and ODP files will be converted to PDF and also uploaded to the conference web site.  We discourage the use of own laptops as time is wasted connecting and disconnecting them from the projector between presentations.  Please bring your slides file on a flash drive to the conference and upload to the venue laptop before the start of your session. You may also email the file ahead of time to the programme committee.

Note that all talks will be video recorded and both the video recording and PDF file of your presentation slides will be made publicly available for download from the CHPC web site after the conference. Make sure to only include information that can be made public in both.

Workshops

Proposals for short workshops are also sought.  Sunday, 1 December 2024, is devoted to workshops.

When submitting a workshop proposal please indicate in the abstract the following information:

  • Topic
  • Presenters/Lecturers
  • Target audience and prerequisite background
  • Format: tutorial, panel, BoF, SIG seminar, etc.
  • Duration: 90 min (¼ day), half-day or full day
  • Syllabus/Agenda
  • Any special requirements (e.g., laptops, cluster accounts, …).

Student Poster Competition

All  full-time students will automatically be entered into the CHPC Student Poster Competition.  Prizes will be awarded on Wednesday 4 December 2024 during the Awards dinner.

Posters should be A2 in size.  Please see the separate Poster Guide for details.
